Here at Starlite Cuisine, we work hard to source the cleanest and most nutritious ingredients possible. We consider the health of people and the planet when making sourcing and manufacturing decisions, so heavy metals are a great concern for us. After reading the results of the recent Consumer Reports deep dive into other mushroom companies’ heavy metals analysis, we sent out our products for updated testing. We were happy to see that all of our products tested within USFDA’s heavy metals standards.

What is Prop 65?

California’s Proposition 65, also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. These chemicals can be in the products they purchase or in their homes or workplaces.

Why is the label on our Mushroom products?

The warning on our products is there because mushrooms contain naturally occurring lead and cadmium, which are found in the soil and can be absorbed by plants like mushrooms. It’s important to note that these elements are found in many foods we eat every day, from fruits and vegetables to nuts and spices.

Many larger companies do not have this warning on their products. They may have the money to pay for large settlements. They may be part of a larger, slow-moving lawsuit.

Starlite Cuisine is a small business. Due to this, we cannot afford Prop 65 litigation. We volunteer to label our mushroom products with a Prop 65 warning.

Our Commitment to Safety

Our mushroom products have levels of these substances that are lower than the amount that would pose a health risk according to the FDA and other food safety standards. However, because we care about complete transparency and your right to be informed, we include the warning to comply with California law.
