Soy Protein Myth Buster

Soy: Protein derived from the beans of an Asian plant, used as a replacement for animal protein in certain foods.

Soy-based products have become increasingly common in grocery stores throughout the nation in the past few years. There are many advantages to using plant-based protein in lieu of animal products. The first is health. When people eat more soy-based foods, there is an overall increase in the amount of fiber in their diet. Currently, most Americans are consuming barely half the daily recommended amount of fiber. “Soy consumption has also been shown to benefit our kidneys, which appear to handle plant protein very differently from animal protein. Within hours of eating meat, our kidneys rev up into hyper-filtration mode. But, an equivalent amount of plant protein causes virtually no noticeable stress on the kidneys.” (NutritionFacts.Org). In addition, soy can be beneficial to heart health. “Research indicates that including more plant protein in your diet, (as opposed to more carbohydrate) has clear cardiovascular benefits.”

There are also positive environmental effects of growing soy instead of raising livestock. The impact of animal agriculture is detrimental to the environment. Air pollution, water, and land use are the main contributors to global warming.
